6 Affirmations of Personal Freedom

As outlined in the book: Gratitude and Trust: Six Affirmations That Will Change Your Life, by Paul Williams and Tracey Jackson

My alcoholism took root in the 70s, even though I thought I was having the time of my life. My memory is spotty, though it’s returning more and more as I develop the capacity to view it from a distance––all part of the mosaic portrait I am learning to accept with compassion and even love.

Something I do remember from the 70s is the iconic songbook of Paul Williams. Songs people of my generation can probably sing word for word, even if we haven’t sung them in years. Rainy Days & Mondays; Just An Old Fashioned Love Song; Rainbow Connection (I didn’t know that was Paul Williams!); We’ve Only Just Begun… and the list goes on and on.

My friend Jon B found a book written in 2014 by Paul Williams and Tracey Jackson that talks about his experience of recovery and the guiding principles for a happy healthy life. (Paul is an alcoholic/addict; Tracey is not but successfully applies the principles to her life.)

Here are the Six Affirmations the book is based on. Sound familiar, 12-Step people? Sound wise and true, non-12-Step people?

1. Something needs to change and it’s probably me.

2. I don’t know how to do this but something inside of me does.

3. I will learn from my mistakes and not defend them.

4. I will make right the wrongs I have done whenever possible.

5. I will continue to examine my behavior on a daily basis.

6. I will live my life in love and service, gratitude and trust.

In gratitude, harmony, and support,

#2 has always been true, and it has never been more relevant for me than at this time of loss and grief. I don’t have a clue how to move through this, but my Higher Power does…
