Step 11:

Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out.

“To meditate means to go home to yourself. Then you know how to take care of the things that are happening inside you, and you know how to take care of the things that happen around you.”    ~Thich Nhat Hanh

“We have found much of heaven and we have been rocketed into a fourth dimension of existence of which we had not even dreamed.”   ~The Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous, “There Is a Solution”

When I first began showing up at a Center for Spiritual Living, clueless that my drinking had morphed into a problem (but super aware of other peoples’ alcoholism), I would only meditate and pray (aka spiritual mind treatment) when queued to do it. My Higher Power connection was alive but dormant, only actively engaged when someone said “It’s that time again.”

It was not, and never had been, part of my daily routine. It was something I had to learn – a skill to be acquired. As my new Sunday CSL experience became increasingly enjoyable and expansive, my emerging version of prayer and meditation began to take hold.

It was a great start.

But often by the time Sunday mornings gave way to Sunday afternoons, and throughout all those days in between, I’d be in my default mode of low (or sometime high) levels of anxiety, agitation, and annoyance. My conscious contact became unconscious contact.

Somewhere along the way I started silently saying “Thank You” whenever I noticed something amazing or even just pleasant. Or sometimes I would just do a silent shout out of “Thank You” when the thought to do so popped in, and I jumped on it.
My prayers had begun in earnest.

The concept that “Hey there really is a Higher Power for good, and hey I really can use it right here, right now” began to seep into my consciousness and take root. I realized it could be informal.  I didn’t have to do it “right” I just had to do it.

Over the years it’s become something necessary and familiar. Similar to the way I log on to my computer each morning, I spiritually log on to my Higher Power consciousness to start my day.  It’s my conscious choice and action to establish conscious contact with this vast and instantly available intelligence.

I meditate as best as I can without judging it. I do the same with affirmative prayer.
I find these things truly have opened me to a new dimension, way beyond that which I could even have dreamed. I feel that my conscious contact is no longer a 1-way street, not just me putting my thoughts up to my Higher Power. Now I see that my Higher Power is speaking directly to me via intuitions, insights, and thoughts.

I get to choose to lean into my Higher Power, which is always there and always has been.

What are some ways you establish conscious contact with the invisible side of your nature?

Do you prefer a formal or informal approach?

Do you receive the answers you seek? How do they reach you?
